As we begin 2018, a new ray of hope and faith shines from one, Dr. Sid Mittra, an emeritus professor at Oakland University, Michigan. No, you may not have heard of him but his story will go down in history to inspire millions across the world.
He met his soul mate, Bani at a young age when he was just starting out into the world. They lived a long happy 54 years of marriage with their two children and grandchildren. But sadly, this happiness was taken away from him when Bani was diagnosed with Cancer and passed away in May, 2016. She was a remarkable human being. Her ever changing roles as a wife, mother, a fine singer in the classical Indian music group Navrang, counsellor, owner and Directress of the Meadowbrook Montessori School, Georgia only led her to help those most in need.
It was her passion to help humanity and so Dr. Mittra embarked on a journey to continue with her dream. In her memory, Sid approached the Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama Charitable Hospital and wanted to know how he could further the treatment and care of Cancer patients. And thus, with Dr. Mittra’s big heart and generosity, the Bani Mittra Cancer Centre, Vrindavan was born.
Why did Dr. Mittra approach the Ramakrishna Mission out of all the NGOs and Foundations abroad? Because his late wife Bani and he shares the same values that the Mission stands for: Making all possible attempts to alleviate human suffering by spreading education, rendering medical service, extending help to villagers through rural development centres, etc.
Because it is a 240 bed multi-specialty hospital. It has been offering services in super-specialties like Cardiology, Oncology and Urology since 2015 and the Ramakrishna Mission has successfully treated over 150 Cancer patients through medication, surgery and chemotherapy. Considering the need of medical facilities in the region, these services have now been organized into a single unit in order to reach a bigger part of the community while providing the best quality care affordable to poor as well as the rich.
In its first phase, the new Bani Mittra Cancer Centre treats oral, throat, thyroid, skin, gynecological and abdominal Cancers. The Centre is now well-equipped with the latest and advanced equipment to ensure quality patient-care.
Guests shall be taken on a tour of the hospital and before arriving at the Swami Vivekananda Auditorium where the ingauration of the Ramakrishna Mission- Bani Mittra Cancer Centre shall take place on the 4th of January, 2018 at 11 AM followed by the ceremonial Vedic chanting.
