Savages in the Name of Humanity – The Gurugram School Held Guilty

The recent incident, where a seven-year Pradyumna Thakur from Ryan International School, Gurugram was brutally murdered after being sexually assaulted by the bus staff, left the entire nation shell-shocked to even respond to such an act initially. Coming straight to the point is the fact are we the citizens of such a country wherein, the vulnerable most being children or elderly will never be prioritized for the safety? Millions of parents from various schools across the nation have felt the urge to bring every such dastardly activity to an end by questioning the managements of the so called education system of our country to bring about effective changes whatsoever the challenges are to avoid any further catastrophe.

The morning of Friday wasn’t thought to have been so disheartening and devastating for the parents of the deceased child of class 2 after he was declared dead at the hands of a serial sexual assaulter soon after being dropped at the school gate by his father. Victimized by the sexual assault by the school bus conductor and murdered soon after is not just an extremely shameful act but has raised a serious alarm for parents of children in other schools and also to those managements who hardly care about the security of the children in schools.

While the acting principal Neerja Batra has been detained along with other officials of the school management committee, the Supreme Court has issued CBI probe into the matter to give justice to the entire matter at the earliest. Renuka Shahane, the popular TV artist turned actor has shared her concern on Facebook regarding how schools lack security measures and what should they be doing to ensure complete safety of children while they are in schools. She expressed her views by saying ‘Totally shocked, horrified, dismayed by the brutal murder of a seven year old child at the Ryan International School, Gurugram & a rape of a three year old by a peon in another school in the national capital.

How do we make things safe for our kids? Parents drop their kids to school with the trust that our kids will be safe, protected within these walls of learning. But incident after incident points to laxity about the security of our kids despite the high fees in many “International” schools.

While there are some schools, who have been working for the security concerns of children wholeheartedly, there is still a lot of scope for others to follow their footsteps. Schools should understand the very fact that the management, at every level is answerable to the parents of children for any mishap that a child faces while in school premises and that by no means they can deny for being responsible for such acts. It is a saddened state of our education system, nevertheless.

Strict Measures on the Security of Children should be the Utmost Priority

As parents, what could have been the most miserable state than not been able to see their child again? Who is responsible for the safety and security of the children while they are on the school premises? Isn’t it the school management that should be taking prime responsibility? Certain points that can help you as parents raise concerns regarding same are as follows:

• The school management should appoint employees whether teaching or non-teaching after performing a thorough back ground check on them.
• CCTV cameras should be installed in the corridors, washrooms or wherever the spaces seem vacant and a child can fall prey at the hands of unforeseen circumstances.
• Only female staff members should be appointed or employed to accompany children falling under vulnerable age groups.
• There should be separate washrooms for the male staff members like the bus guards, conductors to avoid their access to the students’ washrooms.
• Schools should be responsible to give an access to the CCTV footage to the parents of children when they board and disembark buses etc.

While there are endless suggestions that we as parents can help schools build a secure place for the children, the security breaches that schools face in the prevailing society needs serious consideration whatsoever the challenges are. Let us work hand in hand for a better future and a better tomorrow for our children who we see as leaders, not savages. It is now or never!
