Google plus to shut down

GOOGLE TO SHUT DOWN GOOGLE + | Another failure in social media

Google’s social network platform, Google + is no longer amongst the league of safe media sites. Hence, it makes sense for Google to announce that it is shutting down Google Plus. The reason for discontinuation of Google +, is its security susceptibility which has exposed the private data of upto 500,000 users. Since March, Google was aware about the bug in API which allowed third party app developers to gain access to personal user data. But the tech giant preferred to be silent about the whole scenario following the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica scam.

According to Ben Smith, the vice president of engineering, “We found no evidence that any developer was aware of this bug or abusing the API, and we found no evidence that any profile data was misused”. Google’s reason for not reporting the leak as sited by Smith is , “ Whenever user data may have been affected, we go beyond our legal requirements and apply several criteria focused on our users in determining whether to provide notice.” However, the norm for reporting the breach had not been met during the whole fiasco. According to reports, it is likely that Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO will testify in front of Congress.

Following these data scandals, Google has started working on their privacy policies. These security reforms will not only allow users to have more control over the data they share while using third party apps but will also have intricate management features for their Google accounts, especially the ones involving third party developers.
It is not a surprise that Google did not out their security concerns, after seeing Facebook’s public condition following the Cambridge Analytica scandal. These data thefts have also brought light to the fact, that these internet giants are too difficult to be controlled and trusted by its users. Time and again turning a blind eye to such security breaches can have unthinkable consequences in the future

For Google to shut down Google +, would highlight it’s another failed attempt at a social media platform. Formerly, Google had Google Buzz, Google Friend Connect and Orkut at its ventures to foray into the world of social networking. Orkut, one of the most renowned social media platforms had a fairly good run but shut down in 2013 as Facebook took over. Google + was primarily launched to give competition to Mark Zuckerberg’s social media giant. However, Google + has only proved to be unpopular and mostly forgotten amongst the general public.

While Google have had various accolades under its wings, social networking sites seem out of its reach at least until Facebook sticks around the market. Looks like google’s dream to be a leading social media player will remain dream.
