Bahubali 2: The art and science of grand storytelling

Bahubali 2- The Conclusion has taken the cinema world by surprise, shattering all records by collecting over Rs 1000 crore (for the first time in Indian cinema) since its release and still counting. SS Rajamouli directed film is one of the finest historical fiction films that have been released worldwide. It has sent all the records tumbling. The success of the movie was imminent as it had already made pre-booking business worth Rs 500 crores. The movie barged into the 100-crore club right on day 1. Bahubali has already added over 250 crores to its kitty from the Hindi version and is likely to cross the Rs 100 crore mark in Tamilnadu by 13th May 2017. Apart from Telugu and Hindi, the movie has also been dubbed in Tamil and Malayalam. And, the buzz has it that the movie may be released in Japanese and Chinese as well!
What sets Bahubali apart from the other movies is the story telling and smashing visual effects in a grandly magnanimous way. High on drama and energy, the movie spells magic on the audience. For two years, the sequel to the first part Bahubali – the Beginning, which was released in 2015 kept the audiences hooked to the question ‘Katappa ne Bahubali ko kyon mara?’ And, the wait was worth it.

Bahubali 2 has the distinction of being the first ever Telugu film to be released in 4k High Definition format. With a release in over 9000 screens worldwide, Bahubali has set the record of this being the highest number in Asia.
It is not just the money that has the whole world talking about the movie. It is also the commitment of the cast and crew to the franchise. The lead actor Prabhas, who plays Amrendra and Mahendra Bahubali, has invested full five years of his acting career to this movie. He did not accept any other offers during this period to maintain the look. Have we ever heard of any other actor, anywhere in the world do so?

While we may rejoice that Bahubali 2 is an Indian film that has done exceptionally well, we must accept that it’s not a Bollywood film. The Bahubali franchise has taken forward the traditional Telugu cinema school of storytelling which is based on mythology. In fact, Bollywood has a long way to go before it can catch up with the kind of storytelling, narration, drama, and visual effects that Bahubali 2 has served. The Bahubali franchise has taken Telugu cinema several notches higher than Bollywood and has rewritten the rules of making cinema.
Bollywood take note, Telugu cinema has arrived. And how!
